The Sport Island Pub
By Shelley D. Zajaceskowski
Nestled
alongside of the Great Sacandaga Lake is one of Northville’s
great- to- get-out-to restaurants/pub. The Sport Island
Pub owned and operated by Anthony Lanzi and family is
going into its ninth year of operation. I approached
Mr. Lanzi by introducing myself and told him I was doing
an article on this place for the Sacandaga Monthly. Anthony
Lanzi started telling me about his place of business.
As he was describing the many fine features, I asked
for a grand tour. He kindly obliged and the tour made
an even bigger impression on me.
First
we stood in the main bar area where the band playing
(wow!) There were wooden booths and tables for dinner
guests with the bar in the middle of the room. The décor
of wooden floors and seating, and a wooden bar with various
signs lining the walls near the ceiling gave the impression
of being not too overdone or fancy, just comfortable.
Next he took me through a doorway near the right-hand
side of the bar into their newly, enclosed patio area.
With glass windows from ceiling to floor and yet another
bar area with tables and chairs around, I really liked
this room. It offered a pleasant view out onto an additional
patio. Anthony said, “This enclosed patio used
to be open but we have recently enclosed it to offer
our customers a different choice in seating or bar area.” It
was really nice. I asked him if he thought the new smoking
ban law has affected his business? He said he didn’t
believe it has affected it at all. They usually have
a large crowd in here every weekend.
We
exited the patio area to a door to the right again and
outside to yet a different deck area. This had white,
plastic tables and chairs scattered about to relax in.
I was admiring the view. The Sacandaga Lake is right
there. Anthony showed me the beach that lined the area,
which also had picnic tables placed about. He said they
offer 40 courtesy docks for boats to pull in to visit
the place and grab a bite to eat or drink in warm weather
months. He also said, “This is a great place to
bring the kids. They can be on the beach or at the picnic
tables doing their own thing while the parents are up
here on the outside patio wining and dining and still
keeping an eye on the kids.” It is also a great
place to stop by on your snowmobile in the wintertime
to warm up and grab some food, which many do.
Back
inside and upstairs there is a banquet room. The room
was spacious and had large windows lining an outside
deck overlooking the lake. With hunter green swag curtains
wrapped in vines the room décor was very pretty.
This room would be great for wedding receptions, banquets,
family get togethers and school reunions. It must be
able to seat at least 100 people easily. That ended my
tour but I really enjoyed my interview with Anthony Lanzi
at the Sport Island Pub and appreciated him taking the
time to chat with me. This is another “must visit” place
I recommend to my readers.
