For countless generations, Mayfield residents have pointed with pride to the Rice Homestead as one of its local treasures.

The Rice Homestead has been lived in and cared for up until the 1990’s by the descendants of its original owner, Oliver Rice, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

The museum is supported in part with donations from the general public, with some general operating support made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Built in 1790 (the original log cabin) and 1810 (the pictured home) has merited a New York State Department of Education official historical marker and is on both the National and State Historical Registries. It is considered a fine, well preserved example of a Federal Era farmhouse.

The home is now a museum maintained by the Mayfield Historical Society. It contains a potpourri of historical treasures from the Rice family and the Mayfield area.
